Summer of sharing
Although we’re distinct
we’re also the same,
all seeking solace and avoiding pain.
Perhaps one day
the looming clouds will open wide
and wash away what now divides and separates us
from the peace that passes understanding.
On that day our eyes will see
our lovely commonality
and share the holy mystery
that dwells in all humanity.

This past Sunday, we explored snapshots of the story of Spirit that is woven throughout scripture. The Spirit, whether in the form of breath (that enlivens), wind (that stirs), dove (that blesses) or fire (that fuels), was always a gift to weary, wandering, disconnected humans. It was never meant to be a source of superiority or separation. Like so much of what we are given, it was meant to birth connection - it was meant to be shared.
This Spirit of sharing we get a glimpse of in Acts was so radical that it ended material poverty within the community.
Sharing is not new to us - it’s been woven into our DNA since The Well’s beginning - we share food, space, books, stories, homes, resources, and community ownership. Yet, we also know there are still too many who struggle to know enough and a planet that is overburdened by those of us who demand more than our share. We struggle to know how best to share our needs, our excess, our stories, our grief and our goods.
This summer, I hope we can make space to listen to one another and to the voices in scripture alongside other sources of wisdom as we seek to live deeper into the kind of sharing that sparks needed change.
We’ll begin by sharing food this Sunday as we host our gathering over a bring-something-to-share brunch inside 120 E 8th Street (home of Sanctuary on 8th Street) at 10:30 a.m. Come with food or drinks or join us empty-handed. We look forward to welcoming you.
If “summer of sharing” sparks an idea about something you would like to help bring to life over the next few months (i.e. a swap, an art or story sharing night or something else), tell us about it here. You can find our playlist for this season here.
